How To Create Engaging Video Content!

Updated: Jun 27

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth at least a million. At least, I think that’s how the saying goes. In any case, video marketing in today’s digital world has become an absolute must for any person or business looking to make a mark in their industry. The right video content can help capture your audience's attention and elevate your brand to the next level.

If you’ve never made video content before, it can feel daunting to get started, but don’t worry! Creating fun and engaging videos is more accessible than ever, and with a few quick tips, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a digital marketing pro.

Hook The Viewer In The First Few Seconds:

Think about how quickly you scroll through your own social media feed. How often are you stopping to watch an entire video from start to finish? It’s probably pretty rare, even for a video that successfully captures your attention. Keep this in mind and cater your content for viewers consuming it on the go. Now, that doesn’t mean to skimp on the quality, but rather to think creatively about how to stand out from the crowd. You don’t have to be Spielberg, but try to think about the visual impact that your video has in its opening moment (and it doesn’t hurt to have good video and audio quality too!).

Boost SEO With A Clear Title And A Focused Description:

Properly optimize your videos so that they are picked up by the right search engines. There are lots of different ways to boost your SEO, but some of the most important are utilizing clear and focused keywords in your video’s title and description. You also want to make sure that the title and description match the video’s content, of course – they’re what the search engine will use to understand what your video is about. Simplify your language and think about what the average internet user might type into Google in order to find your video. For example, if you want to film yourself explaining your favorite apple pie recipe this November, you might title it "How To Bake A Delicious Apple Pie For Thanksgiving." Be clear, catchy, and concise!

Know Your Audience And Research What They Like:

As with all content, finding your niche is key. You don’t need to be an expert on everything – just know what you’re good at and try to be an expert at that! Whether you want to do tutorials, comedy videos, behind the scenes walkthroughs, or something else entirely, doing your research first is crucial. Find the video creators who are popular within your niche and whose work you admire, and watch their recent work. Take notes. What aspects of their videos do you find most engaging? How do they title their work? How often are they posting? Who seems to be their demographic? How long are typical videos on YouTube vs. Instagram? The more research you do, the easier it will be to start creating quality content!

Be Strategic With Your Videos:

You don’t have to become an expert graphic designer, but there are lots of easy ways you can incorporate fun graphics into your videos to further engage your audience. There are tons of YouTube tutorials out there about how to, for example, add in a green screen effect or floating text. Programs like Canva that you’re probably already using have video design elements that you might not even be aware of. It’s also always a great idea to incorporate subtitles so that your video can be even more accessible to a wider audience. And think about adding in music as well! Just make sure to look for music that isn’t copyrighted by browsing places like the YouTube Audio Library or Creative Commons Music.

Create A Posting Schedule And Stick To It:

Posting regularly is important for building your brand. To that end, find a sustainable way to release content. Track how long it takes you to film, edit, and release your very first video. Can you do it any faster? Which part is taking you the longest? Get yourself into a rhythm with the posting process and take some time to engage with viewers who are commenting on your work. Releasing videos on a regular schedule will help you to build trust with your audience as well as excitement for your content.

Tell A Story, Create A Call To Action, And Have Fun:

At the end of the day, having fun is the most important step with content creation! It is hard work, but it’s also work that allows you to stretch your creative muscles. Use your imagination and think about your role as a visual storyteller. Aim to evoke an emotional response in your viewer and keep them engaged throughout the video. Find new ways to inspire your audience with every new video you create and find plenty of joy in the process!
